Makuri Islands is an entirely new Zwift world primed for future expansion. The first map within Makuri Islands was Yumezi, released in May 2021. It is a fantastical countryside destination, inspired by Japanese culture. In October 2021, Neokyo was released and designed to introduce the fast-paced nature of city living to Makuri Islands. In September of 2022, Zwift released its newest Makuri expansion call Urukazi.
The spirit of an ancient land is calling. Yumezi’s tranquil forests have been still and quiet for years but from today, a new energy will be felt as its roads and gravel trails will be opened to Zwifters for exploration by bike or by foot. Yumezi (yu-meh-zi ᐧ 夢路) means “path to dreams.” Yumezi is a Japanese haiku-inspired name, with its two characters (夢路) taken from a poem by renowned Meiji-era poet, Shiki Masaoka.
Neokyo is designed to introduce the fast-paced nature of city living to Makuri Islands, fast flat roads, towering buildings, eye-popping neon billboards, nighttime revellers and arcade halls make Neokyo a perfect place to test your legs and ride fast.
Urukazi is the combination of two Okinawan words — “uru” means “shore,” and “kazi” means “breeze.” The combination of the two words is meant to evoke the serene, untouched character of the Southern Japanese archipelago. On the terrain of Urukazi, you’ll find a Zwifty interpretation of those islands’ scenery, as you ride pavement, gravel, and a new type of surface not yet found anywhere else on Zwift.
Geography[]
Yumezi boasts a wide variety of road types from tight, flat, winding roads ideal for fast races to dirt roads and cobbled market streets. Zwifters exploring the new map will discover lush green fields, ginkgo forests bristling with life and mystical creatures, cherry blossom trees, gushing waterfalls and ancient temples. This new map really is one for the senses, so why not hide your display for the first ride and soak in the scenery?
Neokyo takes inspiration from Japan’s major cities, vibrant colors, popping neon lights and glistening fast roads ensure this nighttime city is anything but dark. Neokyo city connects with existing Yumezi routes. The newly added routes look to be flat and fast, with several sprint points and neon lights lining the virtual roads.
