Climbing Portals[]
Climbing Portals were introduced in July 2023. These Climb Portals provide easy access to a rotating schedule of GPS-accurate virtual versions of famous real-life climbs. Their most noticeable quality is the “gamified” appearance of the roads, which are colored to match the gradient, with no surrounding real-life environmental visuals. This allows Zwift to quickly add new climbs to the game with no custom artwork required. The portal entrances are located in Watopia and France. These can be accessed from the routes menu, which lists the day’s featured climb as an option. You can also access the Climb Portals by navigating to them during your free ride via the Volcano circuit in Watopia and in France via a left-hand turn toward Mont Saint-Michel when traveling the main loop clockwise.
Climbs are categorized based on how tough they are, which depends both on the climb's length and its average incline. The toughest climbs are rated 'HC' (HC comes from Hors Catégorie, which is French for beyond categorization). Climbs then range from 1st (more difficult) to 4th (less difficult). Any climb less than 4th category does not get a rating.
Climb portal elevation can be adjusted to 4 different levels which adjusts the meters/feet climbed. The 4 levels are: 125%, 100%, 75% and 50%. The default is 100% and this level must be climbed before the 125% level is unlocked. Levels 75% and 50% are not supported in Strava segments.
Clicking the climb portal links will show a detailed description, multiple maps & details of the specific portal on Zwift Insider.
